A Taiwanese research study looked at the likelihood of developing dementia after someone survives a stroke. You can read the full article here:
Acupuncture after stroke may reduce risk of dementia
They used data from their National Health Insurance programme where 226,699 stroke survivors aged over 50 years old were identified, with 5610 of them having received acupuncture.
Researchers compared the results of these survivors with a control group made out of people who had not received acupuncture. Both groups were analysed and researchers also recorded the number of dementia cases diagnosed during the same period of time.
They found that survivors who had acupuncture showed a lower incidence of newly diagnosed dementia, compared to those who did not received the treatment.
It was also determined that acupuncture seemed to have better results than physical rehabilitation, although the combination of both treatments was reported to be the best option.
Even with its limitations, this study gives an important knowledge about the role of acupuncture in stroke and dementia, since it used large amounts of data.
